Telling My Parents Was Weird, But I Felt A Lot Better After I Did

Who Did You Come Out to First?

I never really "came out" to my friends because I just hung out with a lot of queer kids and everyone was really open to what everyone else was doing. I did have to "come out" to my parents which was awkward.

Were There Any Challenges?

I had kind of an awkward coming out experience. It was during my dad's birthday dinner and my mom made a comment like, "You sure know a lot of gay people," and I felt like I had to say something. So I said, well, maybe that's because I am one of those people.

Things were a little uncomfortable for a while with my parents and because I'm bi I always think that they are more comfortable when I am dating a guy. But it's been a while now and I just feel a lot better, like everyone else knew this part of me, except my parents.

Advice

  • I kind of made my dad's birthday weird. I vote not coming out at events like birthdays or Christmas.
