Same Sex Sexual Assault

Gay Teen Victims of Rape

By

Rape is often called the most underreported crime. In fact, according to the National Institute for Justice, only 39% of rapes are reported, and the numbers for victims of incest--which refers to sexual assault by a family member--are even lower. There are countless reasons for this.

Victims can be ashamed and fearful. Many are afraid of what such revelations will do to their families, and some feel the need to protect the perpetrator. Often, gay teens worry that they won’t be believed.

Guys who have been raped by other guys are often fearful of seeking help because of homophobia. But it is estimated that as many as 10% of rape victims are male.

Girls who are assaulted by other girls may not realize that what happened to them is a crime.

But here's the deal: It is against the law to force someone to do something sexually that they do not want to do. This is true regardless of the gender or sexual orientation of the victim or the perpetrator.

If you have been the victim of a sexual assualt there is help. You can call the Rape Abuse Incest National Network hotline at 1.800.656.HOPE of check out their website for more information.
