What Gay Teens Need to Know About Sexual Assault

By , About.com Guide

Rape is often called the most under reported crime. This is often due to feelings of shame surrounding an attack. But when it comes to this type of assault, whether you are gay or straight, you sure aren't alone. Here are some rape facts gay teens need to know.

The Facts

According to the Rape Abuse Incest National Network:

  • 1 out of every 6 American women have been the victims of an attempted or completed rape in their lifetime
  • 1 in 33 men have experienced an attempted or completed rape in their lifetime.
  • 44% of rape vicitims are under age 18.
  • 73% of sexual assaults were perpetrated by a non-stranger.

Specific Considerations for GLBT Victims of Sexual Assault

Gay men, lesbians, bisexuals and transgender individuals may also be targeted for a rape as a hate crime or as an act or anti-gay violence. In many of these cases, attackers also verbal harass and name-call the victim during a sexual assault.

Don't Blame Yourself

Rape is never a victim's fault. No matter what you are wearing, who you are hanging out with, whether you are high or drunk, flirty or not, no one has the right to force you to do something sexual that you don’t want to do.

Getting Help

If you have been the victim of a sexual assault, please consider getting help. A good resource is the Rape Abuse Incest National Network (RAINN). They can be reached online or at 1-800-656-HOPE. You can also contact the Anti-Violence Project, a great resource for the GLBT community.
