Myth: Gays Recruit Teens

By , About.com Guide

You may have heard the myth that gays recruit teens. You probably didn't believe it, but a lot of people do.

When you think about it, it's pretty easy to debunk this myth. First of all, sexual orientation is not something that a person can change, so it would make little sense for anyone to try to recruit others!

It is true that some gay teens date adults and have older partners. But it is also true that plenty of straight teens have older partners.

Unfortunately, when a gay teen dates someone older people may assume that he or she has been "recruited" and not looked at other issues, including the fact that because adults are more likely to be out than are teens, it can be hard for GLBT teens to meet people their own age.

The bottom line? There is no gay recruitment machine.
