Advocates for Youth was founded in 1980. Originally it was called the Center for Population Options. Eventually the name was changed to better reflect the mission of the organization.
What They Do:
Advocates for Youth fights for adolescent reproductive and sexual health through education and (hence the name) advocacy to government and community groups.
In addition to working with adults, the organization works directly with youth, training peer educators and youth leaders.
Topics of Focus:
Advocates for Youth addresses a number of issues including:
- Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, and Questionings Youth
- Young Women of Color
- Youth of Color
- Youth Activists and Leaders
- Emergency Contraception
- Teen Pregnancy Prevention
- Entertainment Media
Thanks to this organization countless young people have had a better chance at sexual health. Government policies in the United States and abroad have been positively affected and many more teens and adults have accurate information about sexuality.
As Michael, who is currently a Peer Educator with the Advocates For Youth GLBT website Youth Resource, explains:
When I was first coming out, I emailed a peer counselor at Youth Resource. He really helped me to deal with issues with my mom. I was lucky enough to be blessed with accepting parents. When I first came out, they weren't hostile. They just were ignorant about gay issues. But with the help of a YR peer educator, they started attending PFLAG and now they're totally supportive. So I know personally how beneficial simply talking to another gay teenager can be...Talking with a YR peer educator can help so much in realizing that you're not alone and there are so many out there with open arms.
