Background:

Adam Lambert is a gay pop singer from California who became well-known after appearing as a contestant on the TV show American Idol. Lambert's his first album, For Your Entertainment, came out in in November 2009.

Coming Out:

Adam Lambert did not come out as gay while he was a contestant on American Idol, explaining he was worried that doing so would overshadow his performance. Instead he came out in the magazine Rolling Stone in June 2009. As he said, "I don't think it should be a surprise for anyone to hear that I'm gay. I've been living in Los Angeles for eight years as a gay man."

Controversy:

In the fall of 2009, Lambert performed at the American Music Awards show. During the show, he kissed one of the men in his band and simulated oral sex. The next day, a number of TV sows recounting the incident blurred out the images. The gay rights group GLAAD, called this a homophobic incident and Lambert himself said, “If it had been a female pop performer doing the moves that were on the stage, I don’t think there would be nearly as much of an outrage.”
