Background:

Kate Bornstein is an author and performance artist who defies many standard gender expectations. Kate was born in North Dakota, and currently lives in New York.

Writing and Performing:

Kate's most recent book Hello, Cruel World: 101 Alternatives to Suicide for Teens, Freaks, and Other Outlaws, tackles everything from bully culture, to options for even the most despondent teens.

Kate is also the author of the books:

  • Gender Outlaw: On Men, Women and the Rest of Us
  • My Gender Workbook
  • Nearly Roadkill (with co-author Caitlin Sullivan)

And performance pieces:

  • Strangers in Paradox
  • Hidden: A Gender
  • The Opposite Sex Is Neither
  • Virtually Yours
  • y2kate: gender virus 2000
On Gender:

In Gender Outlaw, Kate wrote, "I know I'm not a man--about that much I'm very clear, and I've come to the conclusion that I'm probably not a woman either, at least not according to a lot of people's rules on this sort of thing. The trouble is that we live in a world that insists we be one or the other--a world that doesn't bother to tell us exactly what one or the other is."

What Else:

Kate speaks regularly at colleges and other venues around the country. You can find out more about upcoming projects and appearances on Kate's website
