There are a lot of myths about what it means to be bisexual.
Here are a few common ones:
- Bisexuality is just a transitional phase on the way to being gay or lesbian.
- Bisexuals are promiscuous.
- Bisexuality doesn't exist.
- Bisexuals will never be happy with just one person.
- Women just say they are bisexual because it is trendy.
- Men just say they are bisexual because they don't want to admit they are gay.
So what's the real deal?
Here are some facts:
- Bisexuality is a real sexual orientation. Though some people may identify as bi on their way to identifying as gay or lesbian, this doesn't mean that bisexuality is not a legitimate orientation, in its own right.
- Just like some gay and straight people, some bisexuals like to date a lot. Plenty of others don't.
- Trendy? Please! Being a sexual minority is a challenging thing. It's great that there has been growing acceptance for GLBT folks, but most people aren't using bisexuality as a tool for popularity.
- I'm sure this has happened before, but so what? This doesn't mean that a guy who is bi, is actually denying who he really is.
Hopefully this clears up some common confusions, because, when it comes to sexual orientation, separating fact from fiction is always a good idea.
