The Bottom Line

The Werewif cleverly used the format of a graphic novel to explore issues related to gender, identity and sexual orientation.

With a tag line that reads, "Linus thought he had bad luck with women until he met a mysterious stranger in a bar who called herself The Werewif, and changes his life for good" -- you know you are in for a few twists and turns along the way.

Pros
  • A creative take on the notion of sexual orientation and gender roles.
  • Strong visuals.
  • An engaging story line.
Cons
  • Like many webcomics this one is not completed. Readers will have to tune in weekly for more!
Description
  • A comic about Linus, a confused young man whose life is changed by a woman calling herself a "Werewif."
  • After receiving a bite from the "Werewif," Linus discovers that he will, too transfrom into a woman at every full moon.
  • Not surprisingly, this transformation brings with it numerous challenges.
Guide Review - The Werewif a Comic that Challenges Ideas About Gender

"The Werewif" (were is the Old English word for man and wif is the Old English word for woman) tells the story of 22-year-old Linus, a young man who hasn't quite figured out some important questions about his life.

After watching Linus repeatedly fail in his attempts at dating women, a buddy tries to set him up with a girl they know. But before the date can happen, Linus meets a mysterious stranger. She introduces herself as the Werewif and leaves him with a bite on his neck, which will transform him into a woman at every full moon!

Creator Gwydhar Bratton, has explained that she started the comic with the intention of commenting on gender roles but became excited about the possibility of having a transgender hero, as well.

Though there are many more chapters to come, "The Werewif" looks like it will continue to be a comic that contributes to the discussion about gender and draws in those who might not otherwise think about the issue.
