"So I'm thinking of coming out to my school this week...Do you have any suggestions for how I should do it? I was kinda thinking of doing it the chicken way and have one of my friends spread it around for me and I could just confirm it if anyone asks."
How to come out is a really big question for a lot of teens. Should you yell your identity from the rafters, write a letter to your parents, or post a coming out announcement on your Facebook page? There's no one way to come out that will work for everyone, and some people might it appealing to get a friend to help them come out by telling people they are gay.
For the record, I don't think having a friend pass on the word is a terrible way to come out. However, there is one thing to consider: not everyone will ask you about your sexual orientation. As a result, you won't be able to clear up misconceptions that could arise. If you do ask a friend to pass on the news that you are gay, lesbian, bisexual or trans, it is important to make sure that the friend you choose is trustworthy and won't turn your news into a gossip fest.
One of the hardest parts of coming out is the fact that you have to do it over and over and over. So anything you can do to make this process easier will benefit you. But just make sure that you think about the risks and benefits to any method you choose before making a decision!
