How to Deal With Negative Reactions to Being Out at College

It’s incredibly frightening to think that some of the people you meet in college will not accept your sexuality, but unfortunately, it does happen. That’s why it’s best to have a plan for what to do if you encounter other people’s negative reactions or homophobia.

Here are a few strategies:

  • Don’t take it personally. Though a negative reaction to your sexuality may seem personal, try not to frame it that way. Many people have not had to confront their own internal feelings about GLBT people and are caught off-guard and uncomfortable when you bring up the subject. This is not your fault, but it’s not the other person’s entirely.
  • Try to educate. If you feel comfortable, try explaining to the person that you did not choose your orientation, that being GLBT is perfectly normal, and that there’s no reason for the person to feel uncomfortable. Your ability to dispel a few simple stereotypes can sometimes totally change a person’s outlook on GLBT people.
  • Walk away. If the person is antagonistic or there is a possibility that he/she/ze may become violent, remove yourself from the situation.
