Lesbian Pair Voted "Best Couple" at South Bronx HS
NPRs All Things Considered recently aired a segment about Bronx high school senior, Victoria Cruz, and her relationship with her girlfriend Deoine.
Victoria and Dione have been together two and a half years, went to prom together and got voted "best couple" by their fellow seniors.
As Victoria explained, "I wanted to win best couple but I didn't know how people would react. I thought they would discriminate." In the end, they didn't, and the girls got their picture in the yearbook along side other winners, like best dressed and most popular.
Nevertheless, discrimination is still a fear for Victoria who explains that she won't be showing her grandmother the yearbook anytime soon. "I plan to tell my grandmother I'm gay when I'm older, so I don't have to hide anymore and we can be closer. But for now I'm still hoping she doesn't realize Dione is my date when she shows up [to go to prom].
The piece reflects a reality that a lot of teens experience; Greater acceptance by their peers than by their families, often assumed to be the result of a generation gap.
Does that ring true to you? Do you think it would be easier to come out a school than at home? The other way round? Or is the idea of coming out anywhere still pretty far off? Let us know in the comments!

Yes, yes, and yes! This is so true. I came out freshman year of high school, and amongst friends, faculty, and etc., it was absolutely no big deal. But my parents, who are Jehovah’s witnesses, would take it in a completely different light and thus I have yet to tell them.
