Are Teens Open-Minded About Gay Issues? A New Survey Says Yes

By , About.com Guide   June 21, 2009

Follow me on:

A survey recently conducted by a market research company called Pangea Media found that 75% of their 3500 teen respondents supported gay marriage. Here are some other findings from their survey:

  • 78% supported the right of gay students to bring a same-sex date to prom.
  • 70% said they wouldn't view a celebrity negatively if they thought e was straight then found out he was gay.
  • 62% said they wouldn't feel weird if a same gender friend to told them he or she was gay or lesbian.

These numbers tend to support the idea that teens are generally more open-minded about GLBT issues that are their parents. In fact, a CBS News/New York Times poll conducted in April found that only forty-two percent of adult Americans supported same sex marriage. Now this is a way higher number than ever before, but it is still a lot lower than 75%!

Still, it is important to note that being open-minded doesn't always mean being totally clued in about GLBT teen life. Only 58% of teens surveyed by Pangea said gay students were discriminated against in their schools. That's a lot lower than the 9 out of 10 GLBT students who report being bullied at school.

Do these numbers sound accurate to you? Do you think they reflect the general feelings of your community? Let us know in the comments!
