The classic love story goes like this: Boy meets girl. Chase ensues. Girl comes around and falls in love with boy. Boy loses interest. Eventually, boy regains interest after realizing what he gave up. Eternal love blossoms. The end.

Now as we all know, that story is not exactly something everyone can relate to. That goes doubly for people who are interested in the same sex. And while it is often fun and eye-opening to read about experiences vastly different from your own, a lot of people crave tales where they can relate to the major players.

That's where GLBT teen fiction can step in. Authors from all walks of life are writing stories about gay teens doing everything from tying on a cape and saving the world to falling in love with the cutie in their homeroom.

Among some of my favorites are:

  • Hero, by Perry Moore
  • Keeping You a Secret, by Julie Ann Peters
  • My Tiki Girl, Jennifer McMahon
  • Boy Meets Boy, by David Levithan
  • Down to the Bone, by Mayra Lazara Dole

To find out more about each novel keep reading...

Hi Ellen,
Thanks for the shout out! There are LOTS of great books with Gay (GLBTQ) characters, and more on the way! Happily, we’re moving from the “oh my God you’re GAY!” books to the “oh my God I’m a SUPERHERO (who happens to be gay.)” books!
Namaste,
Lee

You forgot a good one, it came out fairly recently. It’s called, “Rainbow Boys”, by Alex Sanchez. It focuses on all the problems that gay teens face. They even start a GSA :)
