Katy Perry's "Ur So Gay" Goes There in a Bad Way

By , About.com GuideFebruary 5, 2009

Follow me on:

I usually feel pretty immune to dumb pop songs. But Katy Perry's Ur So Gay, reaches a new low.

The song is supposedly about an ex (possibly Pete Wentz?) of Perry's. It's your standard, we broke up, you done me wrong, now I'm going to bash you in song, ode that we've heard a million times before.

But this version comes with a twist. The major crime of Katy's ex is not cheating or partying. Nope. It is being a straight guy who acts "gay." That is, if being gay means you are a soy eating, make-up wearing, Mozart listening, electric car driving depressive.

Perry sings:

I hope you hang yourself with your H&M scarf / While j**ing off listening to Mozart / You b*** and moan about LA / Wishing you were in the rain reading Hemingway / You don’t eat meat / And drive electrical cars You’re so indie rock it’s almost an art / You need SPF 45 just to stay alive / You’re so gay and you don’t even like boys

Does Perry think that because she sings about kissing a girl in I Kissed a Girl she now gets a free pass to make as many homophobic references as she likes? That she's "part of the club" so it's okay? Or has she, like so many others, jumped on the notion that it's sexy and cool for two (straight) women to hook-up, but gross for guys to exhibit "gay" traits?

Whatever, her motivation, Perry's song reveals a lot more about her true character than it does about her ex, a guy who based on her song, I might actually enjoy hanging out with.

Have you heard the song? What do you think of it?

If she’s trying to be edgy, that’s total fail. Alanis Morissette does a much better job in the “F**k You!” department with “You Oughta Know.”

Oh, that’s hideous of her. Thanks for exposing it! We can’t let this kind of thing slide… it sets the tone, in a tipping point kind of way.
Thanks for all you do,
Namaste,
Lee

Well, i believe that bitching about this song is kinda dumb. The song explains that her old BF was considered ‘emo’ or ‘meterosexual’, which (if you dont know this) that they dress like a gay man, meaning they have style.

It is not an attack at the gay comunity its just a song that she wrote when she was angry. Everyone has a tick when they are mad, me? I eat. Just because i got double – double chocolate chip over strawberry delight doesnt mean its an attack. Think before you get angry over something thats unreasonable.

Katy Perry did not write ‘I Kissed a Girl’ but she did write ‘Ur so Gay’, she wrote ur so gay before she was even with the recent 2007 hits record label. Get some facts before you bitch.

Im gay and i dont feel the need to defend myself over a SONG.

Katy Perry’s a bitch. She thinks it’s okay to kiss a girl when it is definitely not okay for a guy to kiss a guy. Girls are so used to living in the men’s world that we are thinking it’s great to kiss another girl even when you are “straight”. Since the major men who run the earth are homophobic, they want guys to think it’s sexy to watch two girls kiss and not on guys. Me, I would want to do the opposite if I ruled the world (As if) so I can get even with the men. Gay men deserve freedom as much as the women. Katy Perry..I don’t like her.

I think the lyrics to this song are being way over analyzed– and by the wrong crowd. This song will make more sense to the young crowd that has been involved with the latest trend of guys wearing girl pants, eyeliner, drinking mochas and really pumping their egos to a ridiculous size. It’s like it’s cool to be gay now, even if you arent…because thats whats in…and it’s kind of driving the women dating these guys crazy…because they are more fascinated with themselves and how “scene” they are than in anything else going on in the world. It’s not a bash to gay people, it’s a bash to confused 20 somethings in girl pants, eyeliner, without a job on myspace all day.

Since you talked about her character, let me say something… She dedicated this song to Tokio Hotel after loosing the ‘Best New Artist’ award to them at the VMA. What I thought it was a very mean/childish thing to do. It’s amazing how she can’t overcome her jealously, and reacts being bitter to the band.
The guys from Tokio Hotel said she can be a difficult person and that she had a (bad) Diva attitude towards them.

It’s just a song?! Words have power. She is deliberately equating the word GAY with BAD. I’m not sure that, in a society where socially-conservative factions are taking away secular civil rights from the the LBGT community, celebrities should be propagating homophobia.

(13) Jordan (Aksr) says:

I don’t think Ellen’s point was about how homophobic Katy Perry is, but the fact that she believes and supports the stupid stereotypes. I’m gay, and I’ve never even touched a scarf, I hate classical music, I don’t even know who Hemingway is, I eat meat (in fact it’s practically all I do eat), and I’m not old enough to drive, but I don’t really care about what a car runs on. The only stereotype I fit is I enjoy writing poetry, but at least unlike Katy Perry’s writings, mine aren’t offensive, but instead what I consider inspirational.

So as soon as I finish with the whole “coming out” thing, I’m recommending my friends quit buying Katy Perry music, along with other homophobic/gay bashing musicians such as Kanye West, Eminem, Lil’ Wayne, and Brad Paisley (none of who’s music I cared for in the first place).

(14) Jordan (Aksr) says:

I just want to add: I’d much rather listen to gay-positive musicians such as Lady GaGa, who regularly thanks her fans from the LGBT (gay) community.

Oh dear, really? All of you people who liked this song until you read this article? Grow up. When have you not said “Oh, that’s so gay”. To Jordyn, the guy who doesn’t fit the stereotype, good for you. But that doesn’t mean the stereotype doesn’t exist. And to the writer of this article, have you spoken to her? How do you know she wrote this as an attack on the gay community. In fact, it doesn’t really even sound like she’s talking about actual gays “You’re so gay AND YOU DON’T EVEN LIKE BOYS” I don’t know many gay guys who don’t like boys… Sounds to me like it’s about someone who was acting as though they were gay (What they believe to be gay Jordyn, the stereotype, not necessarily the truth) because it’s the ‘in’ thing to do. Which, by the way, is annoying.

(20) LCC says:

i think the song is about a man who is really gay but he claims that he’s NOT gay (you’re so gay and you don’t even like boys) he is claiming that he is not gay but in all reality HE IS GAY – that’s why at the end she says she wished that he would JUST BE REAL with her. it’s a song about “down low” gay men and they are ONLY cheating themselves by being with women. they are living a lie. they need to be openly gay and leave the women alone.

i agree completely with LCCC im gay and i dont take offense to any of this song, and have any of you seen her twitter? shes always talking about gay rights, its just a song.

Okay but words reflect the way people THINK about things. The word is gay the affect connected to it in this song is “BAD.” The more we use the term negatively the more we come to implicitly connect BAD – GAY. There is A TON of research in social psychology which supports this conclusion. It is only ignorance of research/well-proven FACTS that make people think otherwise. Education is key – gotta get educated on this stuff. I used to be of the opinion that people needed to take things less seriously until I really learned more about this research. Just entertain the thought at least and get yourself educated before you conclude anything.
