Today's Teens Aren't Taking As Many Sexual Risks As They Used to
Something I get really sick of is the idea that kids these days are "wilder" than those of earlier generations. Sure today's teens face certain challenges that would have blown the minds of those in the past. But when it comes to sex, today's teens are actually making some better choices than they were fifteen years ago.
According to the CDC's Youth Risk Behavior Survey the amount of teens who:
- ever had sex dropped from 54% in 1991 to to 47% in 2007
- had sex with four or more people dropped from 19% in to 1991 to 15% in 2007
- used a condom the last time they had sex increased from 46% in 1991 to 62% in 2007
They survey didn't make distinctions between gay and hetero students, and it is true that young gay men are one of the fastest growing groups to contract HIV and also often report that they do not always use condoms. That being said, plenty of gay teens are being safe, and all teens should be heartened by the CDC's findings!
