Prop 8 Update
At the beginning of the month, Obama got elected to become the next American President and something called Proposition 8 passed in California. This effectively changed the state Constitution to only define marriage as a union between a man and a woman. In doing so, it ended the right of same-sex couples to marry, which they had legally been able to do since May 2008.
However, the future of the proposition is unclear. Since it passed there have been peaceful protests across the country. (Check out some great pictures of the Pittsburgh protest on the Guide to Atheism's site).
Also, experts still aren't 100% certain that a proposition on a ballot can indeed change the state constitution and no one seems certain what this means for the nearly 20,000 same sex marriages that took place in the months that they were legal.
Last week, the California Supreme court agreed to review these issues and a hearing looks like it will be set for March. However, until then no gay marriage can be performed in the state.
