A reader posted this question to the community forum:
so last night i was hanging out with my friends and one of them is a girl ( they don't know i'm gay) and she kinda asked me out. I said i would think about it. shes a really close friend and i enjoy spending time with her and my friends but i don't have feelings for her. and i'm scared to say no and if i do she just going to tell all of my other friend. and then there going to start wondering why i said no. so what should i do ? :(

Im gay and ive had this happen so many times before. Ive said no to every girl that has asked me out. most people know im gay and are fine with it, if your scared of your parents figuring out then only let your friends know about this. If they are really your friends then they will be fine with it. Just make sure you only tell the friends you trust.

I’d say just to be as nice as you possibly can and just say things like “I’m not ready for that kind of thing yet. I consider us more as friends than dating.” If you’re up to it even tell her that you are gay. I have a girlfriend and she knows that I’m bisexual. If that person is really your friend, then they will understand and accept you no matter what!
