Coming Out Questions

Sunday December 9, 2007

A lot of teens have questions about coming out. A girl posted this on the forum boards this week:

So... I've been thinking more and more about coming out at school. My parents already know and so do a few of my friends and I think I might be ready to just come out. I don't mean like making a big deal out of it like shouting from the rooftops that I'm gay but just maybe putting on my facebook that I'm interested in women and being honest when people ask me. There are a lot of rather conservative people in my town but there are also quite a few liberal people as well...I'm just kind of unsure, I'd like to hear from anyone who is out at school. How is it going for you? Do people avoid you or look at you differently? I'm pretty sure I want to do this but... I guess I just need some reassurance or something.

It's an interesting reminder that everyone is going to find different challenges in coming out. For people like this poster, being out at school is a lot harder than being out to mom and dad. For other teens, the opposite is true.

Sometimes hearing from other people who are going through the same things that you are is a good way to help sort out your feelings
